The soybean market chopped in a narrow and mostly higher range today before finishing near yesterday's closing levels. Volume was light and dominated by specs who were buyers early in the day, but were said to be evening up ahead of the long holiday weekend as the day progressed. Meal and oil were also mixed to mostly higher on the day. Traders credited the modest strength to short covering ahead of the long holiday weekend as well as a higher crude oil market and a short covering bounce in palm oil overnight. In addition, funds were buyers of around 2000 contracts in soybeans and 1000 contracts in oil. News is light and traders indicate that the rains of the last two and a half days may be priced into the market at this point. Most of the rain is expected to move through the Midwest by tomorrow, and analysts note that the relief it will provide to dry soybeans fields is somewhat spotty. Today's deliveries against the September contracts were revised lower after the open today. The revised totals are: 3 contracts in soybeans, 2,899 contracts in oil and zero in meal.
